The fox and the goat

A fox fell into a deep well and could find no means of escape.
A goat, overcome by thirst, came to the same well and seeing the fox, inquired if the water was good.
The fox, concealing his misfortune under a cheerful smile, began to hold forth on the excellence of the water, saying that it was the most delicious he had ever drunk, and that the goat must come down and taste it.
The goat, mindful only of his thirst, thoughtlessly jumped down.
When he had quenched his thirst, the fox told him of the difficulty they were both in, and suggested a scheme for their escape, "if" said he."you will place your forefeet upon the wall and bend your head, I will run up your back and escape, and will help you out afterward.

Then he immediately made off as last as he could. The goat cried out to him to stop and fulfill his part of the bargain, but the fox turned around and replied.
"You foolish old fellow! if you had as many brains in your head as you have hair in your beard, you would never have gone down before you had inspected the way up, or have exposed yourself to dangers from which you had no means of escape."

 สุนัขจิ้งจอกกับแพะ

สุนัขจิ้งจอกตัวหนึ่งตกลงไปในบ่อลึกแห่งหนึ่ง และมันก็หาทางขึ้นไม่ได้
แพะที่กระหายน้ำตัวหนึ่งเดินผ่านมายังบ่อแห่งเดียวกัน เมื่อมันเห็นสุนัขจิ้งจอก จึงร้องถามไปว่า
"น้ำในบ่อนี้รสชาติดีไหม"
สุนัขจิ้งจอกซ่อนความโชคร้ายของตนไว้ด้วยรรอยยิ้มอันร่าเริงเริ่มบอกถึงความดีของน้ำว่า
"น้ำในบ่อนี้รสชาติดีที่สุดเท่าที่ข้าได้เคยดื่มมาเชียวล่ะ แกควรจะลงมาดื่มดูบ้าง"
แพะกังวลอยู่แต่เรื่องความกระหายของมันเท่านั้น มันไม่ได้คิดให้ลึกซึ้งจึงกระโดลงไปในบ่อ
เมื่อมันได้น้ำมาดับความกระหายแล้ว สุนัขจิ้งจอกก็บอกมันถึงความลำบากที่ต้องอยู่ในบ่อด้วยกันและแนะนำถึงแผนการที่จะหาทางขึ้นจากบ่อได้โดยพูดว่า
"ถ้าแกเอาขาหน้าเกาะไว้ข้างบ่อและก้มหัวลง ข้าจะวิ่งขึ้นไปบนหลังแก แล้วก็จะขึ้นไปจากบ่อได้ และจะช่วยให้แกขึ้นไปทีหลัง"
แพะคิดว่านี่เป็นแผนที่ดีจึงตกลงตามนั้น
สุนัขจิ้งจอกกระโดดขึ้นไปบนหลังของแพะและพยุงตัวด้วยเขาของมัน ผลักตัวเองขึ้นไปถึงปากบ่อโดยปลอดภัย แล้วมันก็จากไปเร็วที่สุดเท่าที่จะเร็วได้
แพะตะโดนร้องเพื่อจะให้มันหยุดและทำตามข้อตกลง แต่สุนัขจิ้งจอกหันมาตอบว่า
"เจ้าแพะหน้าโง่ ถ้าในหัวของแกมีมันสมองมากเหมือนกับขนที่เครา แกก็คงจะไม่ลงไปในบ่อก่อนที่จะได้ตรวจดูทางขึ้นเสียก่อน หรือแกคงไม่ยอมเอาตัวเข้ามาอยู่ในที่อันตราย ซึ่งไม่มีทางหนีรอดได้หรอก"


นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า : จงพินิจให้ดีก่อนตัดสินใจทำอะไร เพราะบางสิ่งบางอย่างพลาดไปอาจเป็นอันตรายถึงชีวิต
